Our client, a prominent food industry manufacturer, based in Port Elizabeth, is seeking to employ an experienced Quality Systems Specialist.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or equivalent
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • 3–5 years relevant work experience
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures
  • Sound understanding of GLP and GMP
  • Strong initiative, accountability, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Good numerical and analytical ability
  • High attention to detail and strict adherence to procedures and policies
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to learn and implement the company’s Food Safety Management System
  • Experience in the food manufacturing industry with cross-functional collaboration
  • Subject matter expertise in Food Safety (HACCP), Quality Assurance, FSSC 22000, Food Microbiology, quality tools and programs
  • Proven experience ensuring compliance with South African regulations, including the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act

 

Responsibilities:

Quality:

  • Support improvement, maintenance, and compliance of the Quality Management System
  • Assist in establishing and implementing Food Safety and Quality Policies, Procedures, Standards, and Specifications
  • Promote best practices in Quality and Food Safety; contribute to company success through teamwork and judgement
  • Champion food safety culture
  • Ensure compliance with HACCP, QA, FSSC 22000, South African regulations, and customer requirements
  • Participate in Internal Audits, HACCP, TACCP (Food Defence), VACCP (Food Fraud), and Special Situations Teams
  • Serve as Deputy for SANS1841 standard; implement and maintain standards
  • Assist with action plans to close non-conformances from internal and external audits
  • Support investigations and resolution of non-conformances

Supplier Management:

  • Manage Supplier Approval Process with Food Technologist; perform supplier audits as required
  • Implement and maintain Supplier Quality Assurance controls and documentation
  • Define and monitor quality requirements of raw materials with suppliers

Calibration:

  • Manage and maintain company equipment calibration program

Training:

  • Educate and coach colleagues on Quality, Food Safety, customer, and regulatory requirements
  • Provide on-the-job training on HACCP, GMP, GLPs, sanitation, pest control, traceability, allergen and extraneous matter management, food defence, and special situations

General:

  • Comply with health and safety, food safety procedures, OHS Act, and FSSC 22000
  • Follow GMP, personal hygiene, and housekeeping procedures to ensure safe products
  • Report any non-conformance or food safety risk to supervisors or managers
  • Participate in internal and external training
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
